FARNBOROUGH, United Kingdom, July 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Boeing (NYSE: BA) 787 Dreamliner made its international debut landing at the Farnborough Airport at 9:09 a.m. (local time) in support of the Farnborough International Airshow that begins Monday.
"It's an honor to showcase the 787 here at the Farnborough Airshow," said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "I can't think of a finer stage on which to present this highly anticipated airplane."
This is the first international trip made by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The airplane came via nonstop flight to Farnborough, U.K., from Seattle.
"We took advantage of the flying time to conduct some flight testing on the way," Fancher said. "We're taking every opportunity to complete our testing requirements when we fly."
The 787 Dreamliner is built by an international team and will provide airlines around the globe with a new level of efficiency in operations, with a 20 percent reduction in fuel use when compared to similar-sized airplanes. The 787 also brings a new level of passenger comfort to travelers including bigger windows and more personal space as well as an environment designed to help them arrive at their destinations feeling refreshed.
Boeing executives and members of the board of directors, dignitaries from the United States and U.K. and a wide variety of media were on hand to welcome Captains Mike Bryan and Ted Grady as they stepped off the airplane and welcomed visitors aboard. About a dozen people traveled on the airplane to conduct testing during the flight.
Fancher and other Boeing executives will provide a media briefing on the 787 at the airshow's main press chalet at 10 a.m. (local time). The airplane, referred to as ZA003, will depart Tuesday afternoon, July 20.

Over 400 people were in attendance including Chamber representatives, local business leaders, and over 75 elected officials. Also in attendance were three representatives from Boeing who were given, as Maybank put it, “a big Charleston welcome.” When later asked about the local region, one Boeing official stated, “I love the small town feel, how everybody knows everybody here; Charleston is such a great place to do business.” By the buzz and vibrant atmosphere of the reception, it appears both the local business community and Boeing leadership are exceptionally pleased with Boeing’s impactful decision to locate in the lowcountry.
O.L. Thompson has been instrumental in some of Charleston’s biggest economic development projects since it started business in 1948. Their latest project is literally changing the face of Charleston’s aerospace industry. O.L. Thompson was selected by BE&K to do the site work for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner assembly plant. The Boeing project may not be the biggest project they have ever done, but with almost 4,000 potential jobs, it is obviously one of the biggest things to happen to South Carolina. Boeing has been blasted by investors and the media for the program delays that have had the 787 Dreamliner program behind schedule. With the recent announcements of the successful test flights and the progress of the new facility, the stock price has reflected a new confidence in Boeing.
With the site clearing almost complete, the focus has turned to bringing in the fill dirt and soil that will be moved into place and readied to hold the foundation of the new plant. The day BoeingSCjobs.com visited, heavy rains had filled the site. Work continued, though obviously hampered by the inclement weather.
O.L. Thompson is well known for finishing on or before schedule and they are used to the wet rainy days that Charleston can provide. A new obstacle for the site work crew is the bitter cold that has plagued the southeast the first week of the New Year. With below freezing temperatures for consecutive days, the site workers have had to adapt to keep working.

12-15-2009 Seattle Washington
SEATTLE, Dec. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Boeing (NYSE: BA) 787 Dreamliner took to the sky for the first time today, ushering a new era in air travel as it departed before an estimated crowd of more than 12,000 employees and guests from Paine Field in Everett, Wash. The flight marks the beginning of a flight test program that will see six airplanes flying nearly around the clock and around the globe, with the airplane's first delivery scheduled for fourth quarter 2010.
The newest member of the Boeing family of commercial jetliners took off from Paine Field in Everett, Wash. at 10:27 a.m. local time. After approximately three hours, it landed at 1:33 p.m. at Seattle's Boeing Field.
787 Chief Pilot Mike Carriker and Capt. Randy Neville tested some of the airplane's systems and structures, as on-board equipment recorded and transmitted real-time data to a flight-test team at Boeing Field.
After takeoff from Everett, the airplane followed a route over the east end of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Capts. Carriker and Neville took the airplane to an altitude of 15,000 feet (4,572 meters) and an air speed of 180 knots, or about 207 miles (333 kilometers) per hour, customary on a first flight.
"Today is truly a proud and historic day for the global team who has worked tirelessly to design and build the 787 Dreamliner - the first all-new jet airplane of the 21st century," said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program. "We look forward to the upcoming flight test program and soon bringing groundbreaking levels of efficiency, technology and passenger comfort to airlines and the flying public."
Powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines, the first Boeing 787 will be joined in the flight test program in the coming weeks and months by five other 787s, including two that will be powered by General Electric GEnx engines.
The 787 Dreamliner will offer passengers a better flying experience and provide airline operators greater efficiency to better serve the point-to-point routes and additional frequencies passengers prefer. The technologically-advanced 787 will use 20 percent less fuel than today's airplanes of comparable size, provide airlines with up to 45 percent more cargo revenue capacity and present passengers with innovations that include a new interior environment with cleaner air, larger windows, more stowage space, improved lighting and other passenger-preferred conveniences.
Fifty-five customers around the world have ordered 840 787s, making the 787 Dreamliner the fastest-selling new commercial jetliner in history.
